Call for papers: Refugee learners risking and resisting (in)visibility in and through lifelong learning

There is a call for papers from the International Review of Education for a special issue on Refugee learners risking and resisting (in)visibility in and through lifelong learning. The deadline for abstracts is 1 August 2025. The highlighted themes are: Navigating precarity; Lifelong learning, vulnerability, and nationalist backlash; Structural racism and sexism in lifelong learning; Hidden in plain sight; Challenging precarity; Lifelong learning as resistance.
Information Literacy isn't mentioned, but information behaviour and information literacy have relevance to a number of those themes.

Call for proposals: Health Literacy and Libraries

This is a call for chapter authors for a forthcoming book Health Literacy and Libraries, to be published by Medical Library Association (MLA) Books, in cooperation with Rowman & Littlefield.
"The new book aims to be a practical and engaging resource for information professionals. The book will provide a compilation of relevant research and evidence-based practices for health literacy work in libraries, including instruction, programming, and outreach for a range of diverse communities."
Invited authors will be contacted and sent chapter guidelines in early 2023. Full chapters are expected to be in English, between 4,000 to 6,000 words, and submitted by April 1, 2023.

Call for LiLi Show and Tell presentations

LiLi is seeking Show & Tell presentators for the 2022-2023 year. "Each Show & Tell will feature a 20-40 minute demonstration by one or two information professionals demonstrating a tool or theory related to teaching information literacy. Each demonstration will be followed by a 10-20 minute Q&A. For presenters who are unable to present live, arrangements can be made to pre-record your session." Example topics include: Education technology & tools; Information literacy instruction in schools; Adult information literacy instruction; Health literacy; Civic and community engagement; Feminist pedagogy; Universal design for learning - there are more examples listed on the website at https://lili.libguides.com/lili/showandtellcfp and also a link to past examples. Call for chapters: Libraries Empowering Society through Digital Literacy

There is a call for Chapters for a book to be published as part of the IFLA/De Gruyter Library Publication Series. The title is Libraries Empowering Society through Digital Literacy, edited by Prudence Dalrymple, Heather Todd, Luisa Marquardt and Charles Wanjala. Abstracts, maximum 200 words are due by 31 March 2022. If accepted, draft chapters are due by 1 August 2022.
The book will be "about the need for, and impact of, digital literacies in libraries to support lifelong learning and empowerment. The term 'digital literacy' includes media literacy, digital capability along with information literacy. This book will examine ways in which all types of libraries can ensure that information in multiple digital formats is used effectively in many settings by various groups of learners.'"
The book is aimed at "educators and information professionals who are committed to creating a digitally capable society in school, public and academic libraries. ... The book’s goal is to share best practice and disseminate successful approaches to accessing, understanding and using information, using different tools, media, and platforms, in various learning environments, both in person and virtually."

Call for IL papers: Danish Library Research

There is a call for papers for a special issue on Information Literacies (“Informationskompetencer i en kontekst- og mediebaseret sammenhæng”, looking at information literacy in specific contexts/ media) in the journal Danish Library Research. The call is in Danish, for articles in Danish. However, they will also accept articles in English. LTEA 2009

There is a call for papers for the LTEA (Learning Through Enquiry Alliance) 2009 Conference. It will be held at the University of Reading, UK, 14-15 July 2009. Deadline for submissions is 20 March. Themes are: 'High-impact experiences' and 'academic challenge' in the first year; Differentiated Learning - stretching the most able, supporting the less able; Enquiry and Academic Literacy; Technology-enhanced Enquiry; Enquiry-Based Learning and Policy - where now? For the Academic literacy stream it says "Developing academic literacy, the creation and the communication of knowledge, is crucial to success in HE. Much enquiry-based learning involves the development of these skills, be it through developing appropriate research skills hunting down information (Information literacy), critically evaluating that material and presenting the results in an academic style appropriate to the medium." Hmm, I would have said ALL of that was information literacy ;-)

ICS conference

There is a call for papers for the 10th Annual Higher Education Academy Subject Network for Information Computer Science Conference (aimed at educators in teh computing and information fields), at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, 25-27 August 2009. This year there is an information and libraries track, and they are particualrly encouraging relevant themes, including information literacy. i3 Call for papers

The second Information: Interactions and Impact (i³) International Conference takes place at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland on 22-25 June 2009. There is a call for papers which closes on 6 February and conference registration starts on 19 January. "i3 is concerned with the quality and effectiveness of the interaction between people and information and how this interaction can bring about change in individuals, organisations, communities and society. The conference will look beyond the issues of use and accessibility of technology to questions about the way people interact with the information and knowledge content of today's systems and services, and how this might ultimately affect the impact of that information on individuals, organisations and communities."
Key themes are: quality / effectiveness of user/information interactions (e.g.
information literacy); patterns of information behaviour in different contexts; impact of information or information services on people, organisations, communities and society (e.g. social, learning, cultural and economic outcomes of engagement with information); more effective decision making.

Libraries Promoting Twenty-First Century Literacies

There is a call from the IFLA Literacy and Reading Section and the Information Literacy Section for Papers for a programme being held at the IFLA (World Library and Information) Congress in Milan in August, 2009. The theme is Libraries Promoting Twenty-First Century Literacies, and it will explore the ways in which libraries can actively promote multiple literacies. The program will feature up to six invited papers, each focusing on a different twenty-first century literacy e.g. print, information, multicultural, visual literacy etc. The paper should say how libraries can promote that literacy, and be based on theory, research, and/or practical applications. Proposals should include a 500 word abstract and basic biographical and contact details of the speaker. Deadline is 15 November 2008, proposals to be sent to Alison Ernst (aernst@nmhschool.org or Alison.Ernst@comcast.net)with teh subject line "IFLA proposal".

LIDA 2009

The 2009 Libraries in the Digital Age conference takes place 25-30 May 2009 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This is the last of this series to be held in beautiful Dubrovnik (I talked at LIDA a few years ago, this is a photo taken then of fish in the clear water) so it is worth going if you can! Themes are: REFLECTIONS: Changes Brought by and in Digital Libraries in the Last Decade, and HERITAGE & digital libraries - digitization, preservation, access. Call for proposals: Expanding Literacy Studies

Expanding Literacy Studies is an International, Interdisciplinary Conference for graduate students, April 3-5, 2009, at Ohio State University, USA. "Addressing the need for an expanded conversation about literacy that exceeds disciplinary boundaries, this conference is a space for graduate and professional students from all fields to ask questions, consider directions, examine representations, make connections, and share investigations of literacy, broadly defined." Various "literacies" are mentioned (e.g. work, art, health - though information, curiously!) and literacy topics. Evidence-based events

Two conferences in this field. Firstly, the Cochrane Collaboration (the key collaboration on evidence in the health sector) has its Colloquium in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, on 3-7 October 2008. Events of particular interest to information professionals are highlighted on teh website at http://www.colloquium.info/ (I'm having trouble with that link, but there is brief info here too)
Secondly, the 5th International Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP5) Conference has made a 2nd Call for Papers. The conference will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, June 29th – July 3rd 2009. More info at http://blogs.kib.ki.se/eblip5/welcome.html

LOEX 2009

The 37th Annual LOEX Conference (US information literacy conference) takes place April 30 - May 2, 2009 in Albuquerque, USA. The theme is Blazing Trails: On the Path to Information Literacy. There are seven sub-themes: Luminarias (casting light on pedagogy); Trail Guides; Off the Beaten Path; Shortcuts; From Covered Wagon to the Railroad (technology); Round-up (collaboration); Are we there yet?

LILAC conference call

The call for papers for the 2009 LILAC (UK Information Literacy) conference has opened. The deadline is is 20th November 2008. The conference itself takkes place 30th March-1st April 2008. The conference themes are:
Inquiry based learning and IL (Sponsored by the Centre for Inquiry Based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences);
Emerging technologies;
Information literacy for life (Sponsored by the University of Worcester);
Supporting research.

Chapter call: collaborative assessments

I am working on some more reports from the CK5 conference, but in the meantime ... There is a call for chapter proposals for a book, Collaborative Information Literacy Assessments, to be published in 2009 by Neal-Schuman Publishers. "This book will include chapters co-authored by librarian and faculty teams about successful information literacy assessment initiatives in a variety of disciplines. As a follow-up to our first two books Information Literacy Collaborations That Work (2007) and Using Technology to Teach Information Literacy (2008), this new book will examine collaborative assessment strategies and case studies at the course and program level ... Chapters need to be co-authored by a librarian and a faculty member. Also, each completed chapter should include the following sections: Introduction; Related Literature; Institutional Context; Disciplinary Perspective; Discussion of the Faculty Librarian Collaboration; Assessment Model; Examination of Assessment Results; Impact on Student Learning; Assessment of the Assessment; Conclusion." Send proposals of 1-2 pages to Tom Mackey at Tom.Mackey@esc.edu no later than October 17, 2008 (also contact him with any questions). First drafts of the accepted vchapters (25-30 pages) will be due on January 30, 2009.

WILU 2009

The 38th Annual Workshop on Instruction in Library Use / 38e Atelier annuel sur la formation documentaire (WILU, the Canadian information literacy conference) takes place at the Université Concordia University, Montréal, Québec, Canada, May 25-27, 2009. There is a call for papers with a submission deadline of December 8 2008. The theme is "reflections": "Reflections can involve: * Research into learning theory; * Investigation into instructional practices; * Exploration of the learning behaviours of our students; * Examination of our identity as teachers."
